What is AEO and GEO?

AEO, answer engine optimization, means structuring a page so Google's AI Overviews and featured snippets can lift a direct answer from it. GEO, generative engine optimization, means making your business easy for ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar tools to find and cite. Both sit on top of normal SEO.

AEO in practice

Headings that match the questions people ask. A short, complete answer of 40 to 60 words right under each one. Plain factual sentences. Schema that labels the questions, the article and the author.

GEO in practice

One clear sentence about who you are, what you do and where, repeated the same way on your site, profiles and directories. Mentions on other reputable sites. AI search crawlers allowed in robots.txt. Up-to-date facts, since assistants prefer sources that agree with each other.

Measuring it

I keep a fixed list of customer questions and check them each month in Google, AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. I note whether the business is named, how it's described and which page gets cited, and pair that with Search Console data.

Questions

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap. AEO is about being the answer in search features. GEO is about being named and cited by AI assistants.

Do I need AEO if I already do SEO?

Most of the work is the same. AEO adds answer-first writing and stricter structure on top.

Can a small business show up in AI answers?

Yes. Specific, local, well-structured pages often get cited over vague pages from bigger brands.
